Memory Management Basics
Paging
Definition
Paging is a memory management technique that divides physical memory into fixed-size blocks called page frames and divides a process’s logical address space into blocks of the same size called pages.
Working Principle
The page table maps a process’s logical pages to physical page frames.
The logical address consists of a page number and an offset within the page.
The page table converts the logical page number to a physical page frame number, which, combined with the offset, gives the physical address.

Segmentation
Definition
Segmentation is a memory management technique that divides a process’s logical address space into segments of varying sizes, each representing a logical unit such as code, data, stack, etc.
Working Principle
The segment table maps a process’s logical segments to physical memory.
The logical address consists of a segment number and an offset within the segment.
The segment table converts the logical segment number to a physical memory address, which, combined with the offset, gives the physical address.

In practical systems, segmentation is often used in conjunction with paging to overcome their respective disadvantages and improve the efficiency and flexibility of memory management.
Segmentation is often used to implement the logical structure of user programs, such as code, data, and stack segments, while paging is used for physical memory management to improve memory utilization and fragmentation management.
Memory Allocation and Fragmentation Management
Memory Fragmentation
Occurs when the memory block allocated to a process is slightly larger than required, leaving some portion unused.
Total free memory is sufficient but not contiguous, unable to satisfy large memory requests.
Memory Allocation Algorithms
Allocates the first free block that is large enough.
Allocates the smallest free block that is large enough.
Allocates the largest free block.
Defragmentation
Moving allocated memory blocks together to consolidate free space.
Paging reduces external fragmentation but may increase internal fragmentation. Segmentation may lead to external fragmentation but reduces internal fragmentation.
Memory Protection
Basic Protection Mechanisms
Store the memory range of a process, preventing out-of-bounds access.
Specify access permissions (read/write/execute) for memory segments.
Privilege Levels
Restrict user programs’ access to critical system resources.
Multiple levels of privilege, such as the 4 protection rings in Intel x86 architecture.
